AEO- Aboriginal Education Officer
Aboriginal Education Officers are provided for schools with large number of Aboriginal students. They work collaboratively with teachers in these schools to create culturally sensitive and appropriate resources and programs. They help to promote Aboriginal Education within the school and assist Aboriginal students to achieve their best. AEO’s also work with the aboriginal community to ensure a whole community approach maintained to support Aboriginal students.
AP- Assistant Principal
Assistant principals are responsible for the management of programs and other significant areas within the school to ensure the development and evaluation of the school’s education program. Assistant principals have the authority to make decisions in regards to teaching programs, education programs, the school budget and areas related to staffing and staff development. They assist in the overall management of the school, staff development, discipline matters which are beyond the management of classroom teachers and allocation of budgets.
ASLO- Aboriginal Student Liaison Officer
ASLO’s assist in the welfare of Aboriginal students across their assigned district. They work collaboratively with the students, their families, teachers and schools. Their role is to ensure and maintain regular attendance of Aboriginal students at school.
DP- Deputy Principal
The deputy principal is responsible for the general welfare of the school’s staff and students. They are also responsible for overseeing all teaching and learning programs within the school. Deputy Principals are more common in larger Primary schools and usually do not teach a class.
ESL Teacher- English as a Second Language Teacher
ESL teachers assist students from non-English speaking backgrounds usually on a one-to-one basis. ESL teachers help to provide extra assistance to ESL students with literacy and language skills. ESL teachers may work in the classroom alongside of the classroom teacher or work with ESL students alone to assist in specific skills that the student requires.
General Assistant
A general assistant supports the school through preparation of materials and equipment within the school. This includes maintaining the school gardens, fields and lawns. They are also responsible for minor maintenance of equipment and buildings in the school.
Leading Teachers
Leading teachers are highly skilled classroom teachers whose role is to improve the knowledge skills and overall performance of the school’s teaching workforce. Leading teachers organise and coordinate professional support, certain areas of professional development in order to develop staff knowledge, practice and professional enjoyment.
Principal
The principal is responsible for the management and development of the school within the government policy and state guidelines. Their role is to manage the evaluation, delivery, planning and improvement of the education of all students and teachers. The principal acts as an executive officer to the school council and must provide the school council with advice on educational matters. They must also implement decisions of the school council. Principals are accountable for delivering a high standard of education to all students, manage financial systems, integrate and manage the schools resources, uphold and comply with legislative requirements, department policies and procedures and are to represent the school as a leader.
School Counsellor
School counsellors are trained in psychology but may also have teaching experience. Their role is to provide the students with counselling and psychological assessment in accordance with the student’s induvial needs. Anything discussed between the student and the school counsellor is confidential. Parents or caregivers can make an appointment with the school counsellor if they wish to discuss any matters of concern.
SLSO- School Learning Support Officer
School Learning Support Officer’s assist in classroom activities and routines for students with disabilities and behaviour disorders. Their role is to assist students to develop personal skills in order to become independent learners within the class and outside of the classroom setting. SLSO’s also assist to the personal needs of students which may include the implementation of their individual plans or programs.
STB- Support Teacher Behaviour Difficulties
A Support Teacher for Behaviour Difficulties provides support for students who have behaviour difficulties. They assist the student to develop social skills and strategies to manage their behaviour in the classroom setting. They usually work with the student in small group settings or one-to-one. They may also assist the teacher with behaviour management strategies that may help the student.
STLA- Support Teacher Learning Assistance
STLA’s work in classrooms to assist with students who are having learning difficulties. They help these students to complete tasks they are struggling with and assist in gaining the student’s ability to complete tasks independently.
Teacher Librarians
A teacher librarian has the responsibility to manage and coordinate the school’s library resources. This may include access to computers and internet. They also provide student’s opportunities to critically evaluate, seek and synthesise information from literature resources. Techer Librarians should provide quality literature across a range of themes and cultures for students and teachers.
