Student Attendance is a legal document:
Rolls are frequently subpoenaed as evidence in court. It is important to keep a record of every day as you may need to escort a roll that you have taken to court. It is for this reason that it is important to keep your records for at least 7 years.
Types of Absences:
There are three types of absences:
- Explained: this absence has been explained by note, phone, email, SMS or verbally and the principal and delegate has accepted the reason.
- Unexplained: The absence is considered 'unexplained' if you have not received a reason for the absence within 7 days.
- Unjustified: The absence is recorded as 'unjustified' after 7 days without explanation, if it does not fit the criteria, or has not been accepted by the Principal.

- Unexplained: The absence is considered 'unexplained' if you have not received a reason for the absence within 7 days.
- Unjustified: The absence is recorded as 'unjustified' after 7 days without explanation, if it does not fit the criteria, or has not been accepted by the Principal.
Attendance Register Codes:
You must mark the roll with the level of accuracy the government requires. This entails a range of criteria to consider when taking attendance.
a - If you are unsure of what is going on at the exact moment in the classroom. This can be changed within 7 days if you get a note from a parent or explanation. You need to check with the front office in case the absence has been explained and you have not yet been notified.
A - Unexplained or Unjustified within 7 days. E.G. If the reason is a holiday and the Principal does not believe it to be true or in good reason, you will need to mark the absence as A.
S - Absences due to sickness. This includes GP, Physio, Dental, Optometry etc. It is important to remember that Dr Certificates are not sacrosanct, and can be refused.
M - i) exemption from (full and part day) attendance at school. Exceptional domestic circumstance, health of student, employment and the entertainment industry, Elite Sports and Elite Arts.
ii) rare Exemption from enrollment at school. Transition to school in Kindergarten, full time apprenticeship or apprenticeship in
year 10
In advance to the event and the parent must submit an application. Should not be approved for children who have been subject of a community services or child well-being unit report where they are not safe to be at home.
F - flexible - not at school because they are not required to be at school E.G. Best start assessments or HSC
B - School business. E.G. work experience, school excursions, student exchange, extra carnivals such as district carnivals.
H - Shared enrollment - can be in two places at once, for example if the student is at school, but not in your class. This could be students who are attending a tutorial centre and/or programs, behaviour schools, Juvenile Justice, Hospital Schools, Distance Education.
