Staff Interaction:
The NSW Department of Education and Communities has a code of conduct which provides all staff with a framework that explains the Department’s expectations of staff behaviour (DEC 2014). This includes interaction between other staff members, students and student’s parents or caregivers.
Within the workplace there will be a variety of opinions, perspectives and personalities amongst staff. It is important to be an accommodating, respectful and tolerant member of the school community in order creative a positive staff environment. Our interactions with staff should be respectful and reflect the school’s ethos in order to be role models for the students and to work effectively as a team.
Staff members should feel comfortable to express their views and opinions. If other staff members have conflicting opinions or a disagreement arises, it is important to sort out these with rational discussion. This should be controlled and calm conversation which does not involve any intimidation or verbal abuse. Bullying in any form is unacceptable. Any form of bullying that is observed should be reported to a supervisor to be dealt with immediately (DEC 2014).
Working collaboratively helps to create positive work environments that promote teamwork, respect and a supportive professional network in the school community. Effective communication, respect and professional behaviour are key to creating a holistic work environment.
